Walt Disney's mother, Flora Call Disney, died on November 6, 1938, at the age of 70, due to carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty furnace in her home in California. Walt was devastated by her death, as he was very close to her. He later said that his mother's death was the saddest day of his life. It was reported that he could not bring himself to attend her funeral and was not able to speak about it for months afterward. However, he later dedicated his Disneyland park to her memory and named the flower garden in the park after her.
